A regular question I get asked by other photographers and clients, is do I prefer shooting with strobes (studio lighting / flash) or natural light?
It Depends on you! Remember it’s not about me, it’s about your needs.
My studio is a small self-contained space; and although it has its own direct entrance, it’s still adjoined and considered a part of my home. It’s light and airy and has just about the right amount of space for the work that I do. While a larger studio has some advantages over mine, you don’t actually need one to create beautiful photographs! (It’s like the statement ‘Wow you must have a good camera to take shots like that’ – Useful, but doesn’t account for the skills and experience behind it!). The studio is about giving you an enjoyable experience and making you comfortable.
I’m very fortunate to have large south facing patio doors at one end of the studio, that gives us the option to use of beautiful natural light straight into the studio space. Another advantage is, it’s very easily to be able to switch from studio based lighting equipment to natural window light, depending on what you’re looking for and or to suit the situation.
Here are just a few examples of some simple fresh all-natural light (and modern) photographs taken in our studio space. This will show you what can be achieved with knowing how to get a child’s cooperation (!), experience in the studio and of course some beautiful natural light!
